I learned these skills in my personal journey from loser to leader. I was once a drug addict and dropout. I used to think this was a pretty poor resume for someone training leaders. I came to realize this is a very useful resume!

One of the most important defining characteristics of leadership is "transformation." As a leader, you can say you're in the transformation business.

To keep moving forward or to stay on top you need to continually adapt and transform yourself and your organization. When I was 13, my father died suddenly, leaving my mother to raise three teenagers and navigate a workforce that offered her few opportunities. With no professional experience to lean on, she took jobs in call centers and data entry, enduring leaders who lacked compassion, basic communication skills, and the decency to offer constructive feedback. The consequences of their poor leadership weren’t confined to her workday; they spilled into our home, amplifying the stress and uncertainty that already weighed heavily on our family.

Watching my mother shoulder this burden left a permanent mark on me. I couldn’t shake the thought: what if her leaders had been better equipped to understand, support, and guide her? Determined to rewrite this narrative, I pursued a master’s degree in Industrial/Organizational Psychology, launched a career in leadership development, and co-authored The Facilitation Advantage—a guide for leaders to cultivate empathy, clarity, and effectiveness.

My journey as a coach began 20 years ago...

I had a well established career in marketing and advertising, working for companies like MasterCard and USA Network. But, while I loved my work, something was missing. That began my quest to find my true career purpose. Bryan Gillette completed a 205-mile run around Lake Tahoe, North America’s largest Alpine Lake, in 76 ½ hours with only 90 minutes of sleep. Pushing beyond the physical and mental limits is nothing new to him. At age 15, he cycled 200 miles from the San Francisco Bay Area to Yosemite and was hooked on long-distance cycling. He went on to complete many self-supported bicycle tours including a 4,000-mile ride across United States, 600-mile ride around New Zealand, and several from Canada to San Francisco.

In 2011 he began running with his first race being the San Francisco Marathon. He has also completed 50 and 100 mile runs as well as the 205-mile run that became the basis for his book, “EPIC Performance.”

He combines these experiences, his success in the business world, and his interviews with 100 accomplished leaders as well.

After years of working in Silicon Valley as a human resource executive, he founded his company, Summiting Group, to coach executives and advise leaders on performing at higher levels for themselves and their teams.
