AI may not take your job, but an AI collaborator might.

Aug 15, 2024

Worried about being replaced by a robot?  It’s possible for some jobs (they’ve been doing it for years) but much, much more likely that you will be replaced by someone who is very good at working with AI.  How do you become an AI collaborator?

The biggest hurdle that you need to get over is to BELIEVE THAT IT MIGHT BE TRUE.  “I’ll wait and see’”; I’m not very technical so it won’t matter for me”; “I’ll wait for the company to train me”.  These are all steps along the road to redundancy.

The number one skill you will need to stay relevant in the age of AI will be the ability to use AI effectively. Many companies are willing to pay premiums for employees that have mastered communication with AI tools like ChatGPT. But the problem is that AI is much hyped, but not much used. A study from the Reuters Institute and Oxford University of 12,000 people in six countries, showed that only a small percentage of people use the tools regularly. 18 to 24-year-olds were the most eager adopters.  Most people are very cautious, and few companies have plans to train their workforce on how to use it.

So you can’t rely on the company to train you.  You have to train yourself.  If you think "I’m not technical" then think again.  Are you on social media? Can you navigate a website? Can you operate all of the hundreds of machines that you come into contact with?  If you seriously can’t (or won’t) do any of those then you may have a problem and are going to get left behind.

Start to dig around and explore what AI has to offer. Realise that you are already using a lot of it.  “Hey Siri” “Hi Alexa” are basic AI.

ChatGPT and its friends and relations are surprisingly easy to use.  When you have got the hang of that look at other AI tools that could help you do your job.

Always start from your job, don’t get carried away by shiny AI widgets.  Think about the bits of your job where someone else could help.  Then go and look for where AI miight be useful.

Start to think of yourself as a partnership – me and my AI.  Then rewrite your job.  If AI can do x and y then what else could you take on.  Imagine and Innovation will help you stay in demand in the job market.  It’s all down to you.
