Some of the questions we ask in the Defy Expectations Leadership Assessment look at how comfortable people are doing reading and research during the working day. It is surprising how many people are very uncomfortable with the concept that they can spend time reading industry magazines, looking at competitor websites, or reading research paper in what they regard as work time. They either do this in their spare time or it doesn’t get done at all.
Yet to be an effective leader you have to be outward facing, you have to know is going on in your market, who your competitors are, and what the adjacent technologies are that could undermine your business. If you cannot do that you are in real danger of not understanding the future of your business, where the threats are, where the opportunities are. When do you chat to colleagues in other industries? When do you experiment with Chat GPT and all its friends to see how more productive it can help you be?
Yes, the present is important, but it is equally important to spend some time prioritising the future. Otherwise there may not be one.
