Stick to the Drumbeat – It’s Consistency That Builds Teams
Jan 11, 2025
Look at a marching band or an orchestra. It’s the drums that keep the rhythm, and that steady drumbeat makes everything else fall into line.
Teams are like that. How many times have you heard, “At the start of the year, we had the best intentions – regular team meetings in everyone’s calendars, a rolling agenda to stay on track. It was going to be a great year.”
But then, somehow, things slipped. Meetings got postponed or cancelled; other meetings took their place. We were all flat out working on important tasks. Suddenly, I’m only seeing my colleagues briefly in urgent meetings. The team is exhausted, stuck in silos, and I’m not even sure what everyone is working on anymore.
Does this sound familiar? It happens to most teams – but it undermines them. That drumbeat of consistent connection is what builds trust. It keeps everyone aligned and creates the space for teams to tackle challenges collaboratively.
The drumbeat isn’t just about discipline – it’s the cornerstone of successful teams. However bad the pressures are, keep that rhythm going. Imagine how disjointed the music would sound without it.
But a drumbeat alone isn’t enough. Thriving teams don’t just work together – they connect on a deeper level. As a leadership team, you spend so much of your time solving problems, pushing deadlines, and collaborating on big decisions. But when was the last time you made space to connect – not just as colleagues, but as individuals?
Teams that thrive don’t just function; they flourish. They have fun together. They understand one another beyond job titles and task lists. When we invest in real connections, we unlock creativity, trust, and resilience.
When teams know each other beyond the surface, they don’t just succeed – they excel.
So, here’s the challenge:
- Make time to socialise.
- Break out of the usual work context.
- Create opportunities to laugh, share, and build bonds.
When we prioritise connection, we build:
- Better communication.
- Stronger collaboration.
- A more supportive culture.
Let’s keep the drumbeat strong, not just through consistent rhythms but by making space for meaningful connections. What does your team do to foster deeper relationships? Share your thoughts in the comments!
